Clackamas Community College (CCC) seeks to hire part-time Instructional Lab Assistant - Industrial Technology positions for available assignments during the academic year. PURPOSE OF POSTION:
Assists the instructor during laboratory learning activities and the while instructor delivers lectures. Prepare materials and training aids and maintain shop equipment and tooling. Monitor student use of the shop areas.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Directly assist in the educational activities related to machine shop, welding or electronics. Provide guidance to students on all phases of hands-on learning activities. Monitor and enforce safe work practices.
- Manage tool checkout and maintain shop floor. Maintain and repair machine tools, supplies, lab equipment, and facilities. Order tooling and supplies. Serve as information resource in response to inquiries from students, public and college personnel regarding department activities and programs.
- Maintain labs and classrooms to ensure safety of work areas. Take appropriate corrective action as needed. Ensure hazardous waste is disposed of in accordance with approved procedures. Maintain MSDS information.
- Participate in the design, layout, set up, take down and staffing of display booths for department.
- Develop and build training aids according to student and instructor needs.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with College staff, other organizations and public.
- Follow all safety rules for work areas.
- Coordinate materials order and delivery and operate forklift for off-loading of materials and supplies.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate.
- Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated technical knowledge related to instructional area.
- Welding assistants should have proficiency with the common welding practices and equipment, as well as fabrication and layout skills.
- Manufacturing lab assistants should be familiar with machine tools, such as lathes, mills, grinders, CNC lathers and mills, CNC sinker EDM and have a thorough knowledge of tooling, work holding and CAD/CAM software.
- Electronics assistants should have a theoretical understanding of electronics, the practical knowledge to construct and troubleshoot circuits and the ability to utilize electronics test equipment such as DMM's, oscilloscopes and function generators.
- Knowledge of all areas must be equivalent to:
- High school plus two years' specialized training or apprenticeship in metalworking, welding or electronics.
- Equal to two years of college and over two years' of experience in related industry.Any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:
- Possession of current forklift driver's certificate may be required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- AWS welding certification. Current first aid card

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Infrequently may be required to move equipment or materials weighing over 75 lbs. with assistance from other personnel or lifting equipment such as hoists or forklift.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Work location subjects incumbent to lubricants and coolants used in metal cutting. Exposure to mist from grinders and smoke from machining operations is frequent. The noise level in the work area is louder than typically found of most office environments. Hearing protection is recommended, but not required. Safety glasses are required at all times on the shop floor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general direction of the Department Chair.
